CRITICAL INSTALL OF .NET You must have the "Microsoft.NET Framework" installed on your Windows (XP or Vista) PC in order to run any ".NET" application, such as the Stock Market Modeler. If you can launch and run the Stock Market Modeler, then you already have the .NET Framework installed. (Most PC users already have .NET installed. Moreover, new Vista PCs ship with the .NET Framework v3.0 pre- installed.) You may also have the .NET Framework because many Microsoft applications also are .NET enabled and require the .NET Framework, such as Microsoft Messenger (IM), which uses Microsoft Passport. (If you are able to run Microsoft Messenger, then you already have the .NET Framework installed.) (According to Microsoft: "Applications and controls written for the .NET Framework require the .NET Framework to be installed on the computer where the application or control runs. Microsoft provides a redistributable installer, 'Dotnetfx.exe', that contains the common language runtime and .NET Framework components that are necessary to run .NET Framework applications.") Check for having the "Microsoft.NET Framework" by browsing for it in your "WINDOWS" and/or "Program Files" folder: 1. open "My Computer" explorer window from the "Start" menu. 2. open the "Local Disk (C:)" path tree 3. open the "WINDOWS" and/or "Program Files" folder 4. look for a folder named "Microsoft.NET" If the folder "Microsoft.NET" exists, then it is very likely that "Microsoft.NET Framework" is installed (correctly). If not, then you must download and install it. DOWNLOAD It is best to download the appropriate version for your Windows OS version (e.g., XP Service Pack 1 or 2) directly from Microsoft's own web site, following their directions, at this link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/ Note that Microsoft offers both a "new" v3.0, a "current" v2.0, and older versions (v1.1) of "Microsoft.NET Framework" -- along with both "x86" (most PCs) and "x64" (only the latest CPUs) versions. Select your version carefully. The v2.0 (x86) version is appropriate for most PCs (running Win/XP Service Pack 2), and is a 22.4MB file named "dotnetfx.exe". (Finally, note that running the downloaded setup file requires that you have Windows Installer 3.0, as indicated on the Microsoft web site.)
